Kurtwood Smith was born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. His mother, Mabel Annette Lund was a fan of a country singer named Kurt and added wood to it while naming her son. His father was George Smith. Kurtwood grew up in Los Angeles, California.

Kurtwood attended Canoga Park High School. He next joined the College of San Mateo and San Jose State University. Smith earned a drama fellowship from Stanford University’s ‘Master of Fine arts program’. He also had been a student of Santa Clara University.

He next began working regularly with the California Actors Theater in Los Gatos, California. He later returned to Los Angeles to begin his acting career.

During 1987-89, Smith portrayed the evil Mr. Sue on Fox’s “espionage comedy” The New Adventures of Beans Baxter. He later joined ‘That 70s Show’ portraying the character of Red Forman.  As of now, the man is appearing as Dick Clayton in the CBS show ‘Worst Week’.

Before joining the cast of ‘That ’70s Show’, he played Clarence Boddicker, the villain on RoboCop, Paul Verhoeven’s influential science fiction action movie. On 1989’s ‘Dead Poets Society’, he appeared as the strict father of Robert Sean Leonard.   His appearances on ‘Star Trek’ franchise include the President of the Federation in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, a Cardassian named Thrax in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Things Past”, and a Krenim scientist named Annorax in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Year of Hell”.

The man has also served as a voice over actor in several projects such as computer games Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, and FreeSpace 2. He also gave his voice to innumerous animation series.    On ‘Gary & Mike’, Kurtwood appeared as a recurring role of vengeful Officer Dick. On ‘Terrible Thunder Lizards’, Smith gave his voice to Dinosaur military commander character General Galapagos.    He voices Bob Johnson on ‘Squirrel Boy’.

Smith is also among the star cast of ‘24′ playing an important character.

Kurtwood Smith married Cecilia Souza in 1964.The couple has two children- a son Shannon Smith aka Dr. Sauce, a musician, and daughter Laurel Garner, an actress. They got separated in 1974. Smith next married Joan Pirkle, an actress in 1988.

Role on ‘That 70s Show’

Kurtwood Smith appeared as Red Forman on ‘That 70s Show’. He used to work with his power tools. His hobbies were drinking beer and watching television, reading newspaper, hunting and fishing etc. His family includes Eric Forman, his son; Laurie Forman, daughter; Bernice Forman, his mother; Marty Forman, his brother. In the beginning of the series, we saw him working at a local auto parts plant. Considering him one of the main characters of series would not be wrong at all.
